  • Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

This song is a lot like “Let it Go”: both songs about characters shedding away people’s expectations, and letting their true selves shine.

I love the contrast in this song and her part “we don’t talk about Bruno” because her part in that song is very beautiful but simple, just like how everyone sees her and even in the beginning of this song but as it goes on you hear more emotion and dynamic in her singing and combined with the music it’s not simple and it’s not perfect but it’s beautiful in a way that’s completely different from the rest of the movie. You can hear her letting go of her perfect imagine and just letting herself come through. It’s an incredible song.

Another way of looking at it is that all the characters in "We don't talk about Bruno" were not happy with Bruno's predictions, hinting that Isabela was not happy with the perfect life that Bruno predicted.

This scene literally shows how powerful
Isabela is. she's a powerful Madrigal gifted
With Chlorokinesis she can grow plants
Out of thin air and can also mutate them without even her knowing.
Abuela should'nt have made Isabela grow perfect Flowers and Roses because there's more to her than just growing flowers.

Lin-Manuel Moranda creted masterpieces with these songs
The lyrics and pronounciation is so often perfectly timed with the beat.
When characters sing in other songs, they sing it mostly in their own little melody. Very sublte but very powerful.

What I like a lot in this song is that in contrast to Surface Pressure, where only Luisa sings and unloads her feelings on Mirabel, this one has both Isabela and Mirabel singing. While Mirabel had misconceptions about both of her sisters and their lives, her perception of Isabela was way more negative and she essentially took out most of her negative emotions on her (partially for good reason because I know Isa's initial attitude wasn't the greatest even with all the pressure and misconceptions), even if we mostly just saw silent, unamused glances. It's when Isabela sings "I'm so sick of pretty. I want something true, don't you?" with a sad look on her face that Mirabel really sings and confesses her own misconceptions about her sister, and Isabela looks excited again when Mirabel admits that seeing her grow the way she currently is is awesome to her, and they start enjoying themselves as sisters for what may very well be the first time in years.

Luisa simply needed to let her feelings out in one go for Mirabel to understand what was going on with her, but she needed to alter her view of Isabela to help heal the rifts in the family, which is why this is more of a sister song rather than an Isabela solo (even though she is the main singer and more of the focus).

yeah, when Mirabel climbs up with isabel when she says "careful it's carnvious" at that point in time I think she's accepted what Isabel is actually.

as soon as mirabel puts her hand on isabel’s shoulder in that scene, isa stops singing completely, surprised, and then lights up with enthusiasm, starting to sing with her sister again. it’s beautiful, and the next chorus makes a beautiful payoff.

Damn I just happened epiphany when you say that that makes me think everybody has been so focused on her being perfect so she can make beautiful flowers but they don't actually know what she actually could do because she never got a chance to explore. Which probably would make her even more better than she is now. Like you said I feel like her actually like being able to feed people is more useful than her just being perfect and making beautiful flowers. Like she can do multiple stuff I'm happy all of them were able to evolve with their powers

  • Zoe Quinn
Zoe Quinn 3 أيام قبل +244

I love how throughout the movie, Isabela usually uses her power specifically for moving only herself on the vines (slowly and beautifully via swings or vine drops) making herself the center of her power use (the flowers literally spiral out from her during her opening twirl). After Mirabel acknowledges that she loves the entirety of Isabelas gift and supports her on top of the tree, Isabel starts sharing that spotlight with her sister. Instead of having to struggle through the room like the first part of the song, Isa starts paying notice to what Mirabel needs to have fun with her. She lets Mirabel mess around with the dye flowers to create new effects and literally makes Mirabel her own vine to get down to the window. Isabela never shared her gift with anyone that directly except maybe her dad (the flower on Augustins jacket was made by her theoretically). But she is literally pulling Mirabel into the limelight with her.

    Lyrics:

    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new

Isa, this is the part where we-

    It's not symmetrical or perfect
    But it's beautiful
    And it's mine
    What else can i do?

Wait, bring it in, bring it in (good talk)
    What else can i do?
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile

    I make perfect practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could i do if i grew what i was feeling in the moment
Do you know where you're going?? WHOA-

What could i do if i just knew it didn't need to be perfect
    It just needed to be
    And they let me be

    A HURRICANE OF JACARANDAAAAAAAS
    Strangling figs, hanging vines

    This is fine-

Palma de cera fills the air as i climb and i push through!
    What else can i do?

Can i deliver us a river of sundew?
    (Careful, it's carnivorous)
    A little just won't do
I wanna feel the shimmer of something neeeeew
I'm so sick of pretty, i want something true
    Don't you?

You just seem like your life's been a dream, since the moment you opened your eyes
How far do these roots go down?
All i know are the blossoms you grow, but it's awesome to see how you rise
How far can i rise, through the root to the skies?
    Let's go!

    A hurricane of jacarandaaaaaas!
    (Woo!)
    Strangling figs, hanging vines
    (Grow!)
Palma de cera fills the air as i climb and i push through!
    What else, what else?

What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep going!)
What can you do when you know who you wanna be isn't perfect?
    But ill still be okay
    (Hey, everybody, clear the way)
    (Woo!)
    I'm coming through with tabebuia
    (With that boo-yah!)
    Making waves
    Changing minds
    (You've changed mine!)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here
And well, i owe this all to you
    What else can i do?

Show 'em what you can do!
    What else can i do?
    There's nothing you can't do!
    What else can i do?

*(isabela laughs)* You're a bad influence.

@Ryppl If she'd gotten a normal power it would have almost certainly been textile related.

But she is essentially the new Abuela--the non-powered person that frankly _should_ be non-powered to act as the emotional anchor and the pillar for the rest of the family. Which makes perfect sense given that not only is Abuela losing sight of how to have a healthy relationship to her family and their gifts, but also....she's gonna die eventually. I kinda wished the show touched explicitly on the connection between Mirabel and her Abuela both not having powers.

@Ryppl Mirabel does have a gift, which is being able to instill hope and help resolve issues of other family members, basically being the one who fixes people’s gifts. The reason she doesn’t have a door or room is because her room is the entire casita and her door is the front door. It prob comes from her optimistic personality and determination because she always tries to look at the root problems that cause issues in each of her family members, and reminds them about hope.

I DEFINETLY love this part of the song. This movie got me on tears when I realize how deep and sensitive they've approached the theme about mental health. We live in a world where we're always rushing and kept by thoughts about the past or future and it's so hard to live in the moment. I will take this song as a reminder of how important it is to live in the present and just enjoy the precious moments we have with the ones we love, just like they did as the lyric went by.

    *Lyrics*
    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
(Show 'em what you can do)
    What else can I do?
    (There's nothing you can't do)
    What else can I do?

Interesting fact: every plant she sings about in the chorus is either a climbing plant like a strangling fig, or a tree like a Palma de cera. The whole time she’s been forced to grow flowers and small plants, like she herself cannot truly grow past what’s expected of her. But since she’s being allowed by Mirabel to be herself, you see the true heights (literally) of her gift.

@brina The flor de mayo IS a type of orchid. There are ~28,000 different species of orchids, the second largest group of flowering plants in the world (only Asteraceae, the asters, daisies, and sunflowers, is larger, with ~32,000 species). so "orchid" wouldn't really be a national flower, it'd be like saying conifer trees are your national tree, instead of one of the many types of conifers like pine or fir.

It's kind of neat how at first in the movie Isabella's power has seemingly no practical application beyond looking pretty, and in this scene suddenly it's contrasted with just how powerful being able to create and grow any kind of plant really is.

3:16 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

3:21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.'

14:6 Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.'

I think it’s important to remember that being feminine does not mean weak. Isabela is not JUST beautiful. She’s willing to forsake her happiness and marry someone she doesn’t want to for the sake of her family. She has her own struggles and pressures yet she handles them with such poise. She has her own kind of admirable strength.

Today I finally understood Isabella. My little sister told me I'm her but i couldn't grasp why. Now I see it. I've lived so much time practicing to be the perfect daughter for my mom and dad, a perfect example of an older sister, perfect friend and girlfriend always doing things for others and others sake. I felt her so much when she said "what could I do if I knew it didnt need to be perfect, it just needed to be". I love this. "I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true". I want to rise just like her by doing things for myself and for well-being. I dont need to be perfect to be loved. I just needed to be myself. I'm sure I can be more than what I achieved by pretenting to be something I wasn't.

Something I really appreciate on this song is the voice acting while singing. During "We Don't Talk About Bruno" Isabela sings in a very airy way, like any other Disney Princess. Here her voice has more grit, it's even a lower pitch I think, which really helps the narrative of her shedding the pretense of perfection.
When Mirabel sings her verse she even uses the same melody Isa used in "We Don't Talk About Bruno", since that perfect girl is all she knew her sister as.
Also love how it's more rock (90's spanish rock) inspired than the other songs in the movie.

Finally Isa starts using her powers creatively! She never really used her powers in a creative way, experimenting with different kinds of plants just used it to create pretty things.

    Lyrics
    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
(Show 'em what you can do)
    What else can I do?
    (There's nothing you can't do)
    What else can I do?

I also feel like Elsa's struggles were divided into different characters in Encanto: Isabella as her need to be herself and free, Bruno as the "villain" that turns out is selfless and scared, Luisa as the pressure of pretending everything's great while she has a secret that's putting too much pressure on her... Also Pepa and the way her emotions change the weather...

I also interpret the line like this: for years, Mirabel for years always suffered at the hands of Isabela’s verbal and sometimes physical abuse. But when she sees that Isabel is at this certain breaking point where she needs support, she helps her. Instead of spiting her and ignoring her for all the abuse she had given her, Mirabel decides to help Isabela instead and help her grow. And this ends up being a good decision, because it ultimately mends their relationship.

Me: In WDTaB, Isabella's prophecy seems like such an outlier. Why does everyone else's suck, but not hers? And yet, one must see it from Isabela's perspective. It's like she's got this tiny, hidden dream of what she wants to be: imperfect, unrestrained, uninhibited... But it's so _antithetical_ to Abuela's expectations of her that the dream must constantly be pushed down, buried far beneath the roots of her beautiful roses. So, when Bruno prophesizes that the life of her dreams would be promised and someday be hers -- well, as exciting as it was to hear that, Isabela must have also been terrified by the idea that her wild, wild dream could ever come true...

My eight-year-old goddaughter: omg look at the cute cactus

Even though every Madrigal member is trying to live up to the perfect image and role, their pressures are also very different and relatable in different ways. Like the main difference between Luisa and Isabela:
Luisa is pressured to MAXIMISE her power and help everyone do everything, because physical work is still arguably the number one thing that people need help with in their daily lives, no matter how much technology advances.

Isabela, on the other hand, is pressured to LIMIT her power to only grow flowers - and preferrably pink and purple ones, because those are the most traditionally feminine and pretty ones. Plants are not as 'perfect' as flowers because they're not as soft and symmetrical. Pretty girls should grow pretty flowers.

Btw blue flowers are very rare in nature and it would be cool and creative for her to grow more blue flowers and plants. But no, they don't want her to be cool or creative. They want her to be a pretty pink/purple barbie doll.

So Luisa ends up being exhausted and stressed, as she overworks and cannot relax. Meanwhile, Isabela is frustrated and resentful (e.g. towards Mirabel who doesn't have to pretend to be the perfect barbie) and resorts to being a "mean girl" to hide her repressed frustration that she's not allowed to fully utilise her power. She wants to prove herself and become more creative and powerful, perhaps more so than Luisa.

Basically Luisa wants to do less, while Isabela wants to do more. The common theme between the both of them is that they just want to be themselves and be free.

The message is that it is okay to be view by others as imperfect. This idea of “perfect” is not by the individual but by other who want her to be something she isn’t and doesn’t want to be. If you are seen as “perfect”, everyone else expects you to be perfect. Never make a mistake, always do what makes someone else happy, have no problems, etc.

The “perfect” this song is not possible but expected of Isabella. She is human, she has her problems, she will disagree with people, she has her own will.
Basically she doesn’t want to maintain someone else’s view of “perfect” because it is too much pressure, unrealistic, and damaging.

@Miles Fairchild Honestly, there's nothing wrong with someone holding themselves to high standards and being successful. Some people are definitely envious of that and would rather spend all their time negatively obsessing over this 'perfect' person they idolize without bettering themselves. The distinction with this character is that Isabella wasn't living authentically. It was all a facade for her family. Some people with these outwardly enchanted lives are under a lot of pressure to perform every waking second because they can't be less than.
